Seen the new hot muggy summer, we have decided to share a project that celebrates thirty years of life and that has marked a new era for the design of recreational parks. It is likely that the creation of the Park of the Creueta del Col in Barcelona was among the first, if not the first one, which focused on retrieving a disused quarry, located on the outskirts of the urban periphery of a large and beautiful city like Barcelona.
The Parkis located in the grounds of an old quarry, in the high part of Barcelona, near the Valley of Hebron and behind the Park Güell. It is a medium-sized urban garden of almost two hectares of extension, which has been exploited to create a welcoming environment for fun and stay of tourists and inhabitants of the city. Inside there is a large irregularly shaped pool that in summer is filled with water to refresh the user in the concave scenario, that of the quarry, which was remodeled in part to be really unique.
The project is not without criticism seen from a distance of thirty years, but it cannot be excluded that the recovery of abandoned quarries is a thorny topic that meets many differing opinions. The fact that the quarry was subsumed by the urban growth of Barcelona, was crucial because the Park was intended for recreational purposes rather than for a simple environmental recovery. Many of the solutions used for slope stabilization and for the establishment of the paths were definitely original and innovative and have been used as an example in many other projects from landscape architects.
The jewel of the park is Eduardo Chillida’s claw-shaped sculpture, Elogi del’aigua (In Praise of Water). The work consists of a 50-ton piece of concrete, suspended from four steel cables over a reflecting pool.
I am convinced that a page in the history of 20th-century architecture should be taken up with regard to this project, not to be forgotten.
Visto il caldo di questa nuova afosa estate, condividiamo un progetto che compie trenta anni di vita e che ha segnato una nuova era per la progettazione di parchi ludici. E’ probabile che la realizzazione del parco della Creueta del Col a Barcellona sia stato tra i primi, se non il primo, che si è concentrato sul recupero di una cava dismessa, situata ai margini della periferia urbana di una grande e bella città come Barcellona. Il parco si trova nel terreno di una vecchia cava, nella parte alta di Barcellona, vicino alla valle di Hebron e dietro al Parco Güell. Si tratta di un giardino urbano di medie dimensioni di quasi due ettari di estensione, che è stato sfruttato per creare un ambiente accogliente per il divertimento ed il soggiorno di turisti ed abitanti della città. Al suo interno è stata realizzata una grande vasca dalla forma irregolare che durante l’estate viene riempita di acqua per rinfrescare i fruitori in uno scenario concavo, quello della cava, che è stato rimodellato in parte, davvero unico. Il progetto non è esente da critiche visto a distanza di trenta anni, ma non si può escludere che quelle del recupero delle cave dismesse sia un tema spinoso che incontra molti pareri discordanti. Il fatto che la cava fu inglobata dalla crescita urbana di Barcellona, è stato determinante perché il parco fosse destinato a fini ludici piuttosto che ad un semplice recupero ambientale. Molte delle soluzioni utilizzate per la stabilizzazione dei versanti e per la costituzione dei percorsi sono state sicuramente originali ed innovative e sono stati utilizzati come esempio in molti altri progetti posteriori di architetti paesaggisti.
Il gioiello del parco è la scultura di Eduardo Chillida a forma di artiglio, Elogi del’aigua (elogio dell’acqua). Il lavoro consiste in un pezzo di 50 tonnellate di calcestruzzo, sospeso con quattro cavi d’acciaio sulla piscina.
Sono convinto che una pagina della storia dell’architettura del novecento debba essere occupata con merito da questo progetto, da non dimenticare.
